Cardamom Shortbread Snowflakes are a great rolled dough cookie that can be used for decorating OR eating. We prefer both, so we turned our cookies into a wreath (the ones we didn't eat first, of course).
This recipe is part of our Countdown to Cookies for the 2015 holiday season.

Cardamom is essentially an Indian spice more often used in savory dishes. It is said to have some health benefits, even aiding depression.
Ingredients
2 cups butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 teaspoons cardamom spice
½ teaspoon allspice
1 tablespoon fresh orange zest
4 cups flour
FOR FROSTING:
3 egg whites
1 teaspoon almond extract
4 cups powdered sugar
Preparation
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Cream butter and sugar together, add in vanilla extract.
Add in cardamom spice and allspice.
Add in fresh orange zest.
Slowly begin adding in flour until fully integrated.
Divide dough into four balls, dust in flour and let chill covered for at least an hour.
Roll dough out to ¼-inch thickness.
Use your favorite cookie cutters, place three inches apart on a parchment lined baking sheet.
Bake for 12 minutes.
Transfer to cooling rack.
TO MAKE FROSTING:
Combine egg whites and almond extract in a mixer, and beat on high until ribbons appear. About 5 minutes. Begin adding powdered sugar, slowly at first and continue to beat until stiff glossy peaks form.
