When it comes to creating spooky, our Food Channel crew is among the best. They put their heads together to come up with an environment to best showcase our ten new original recipes for Halloween—and it’s, well, just a bit chilling. Picture what it would be like if you walked into an abandoned castle and found the dining room table, set with beautiful antique china and tarnished silver serving dishes.
Locke Hilderbrand, one of our Food Channel food specialists, explains. “We wanted something spooky but formal," he said. "While others were focusing on making Halloween cute, we wanted to make something adult that fit the season and still give off the creepy vibe that seems to have been somewhat lost over the years.
“We looked for recipe ideas that fit the colors and were realistic for a fall dinner, without being too formal or stuffy. Things that had orange and black tones allowed us to say ‘Halloween’ without having to have jack ‘o lanterns and heavy theming in the shoot," he added.
“It’s not rotting food—the surprise and fun is in the setting of an abandoned banquet room. We wanted to strike the balance of making everything look desolate but the food. We wanted the food to be the only thing that was alive.”
So, picture how our Food Channel artists brought it to life:
Pink roses adorn the center of the table, with evergreen gone brown and spider webs doing their best to choke what life is left on the table. It’s as though this dining room has not seen footfalls for a hundred years . . . and yet someone is in the kitchen. Or some Thing.
In the midst of the derelict setting, beautiful food just keeps mysteriously appearing. The first course is Roasted Sweet Potato Soup with Crème Fraiche and Candied Pecans, with a melt-in-your-mouth flavor that may have you convinced you dreamed the whole thing. But, the soup is followed by a full and delectable menu, complete with tantalizing drinks and two choices for dessert.
Wait, is this heaven . . . ?
