An exclusive interview with the star of Momma Cuisine
Ask the Chef
Johanna Cook is the bright star of Momma Cuisine, and we’ve been carrying her videos on the Food Channel as a way to bring her great style direct to you. In addition to Momma Cuisine, Johanna has a new show, called In the Kitch. It is a live and interactive show aired through the Periscope app every Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. Central. Johanna goes live in her own kitchen, visiting local markets, and even in test kitchens, all to share recipes and tips.
We love her personality, food concepts, and recipes, so here's our exclusive interview so you can learn more about the face of Momma Cuisine. Here are our questions, and her fun answers, so read on and get to know Johanna Cook!
Who were your early cooking influencers?
“My mom and my grandmother are famous in their own right for their cooking. At a very young age, even though I didn’t understand it the way I do now, I knew early on that I wanted a big part of my life to be centered on cooking and food.”
Do you have a favorite food-related childhood memory?
“When we first moved from Manila, in the Philippines, to San Francisco, my mom had no idea how to cook a turkey for Thanksgiving, so, instead, our whole family, including aunts, uncles, and cousins, would spend Thanksgiving dinner at a 12-course Chinese restaurant in San Francisco. It was so fun and my sister and I actually want to bring back that tradition this year.”
Do you have any hobbies that inspire you outside of your daily work?
“I love antiquing. It’s a love that I started to get back on again. The last 10 years I was so focused on other things, and now I am at the point in my life where I am giving myself the opportunity to do the things that inspire me once again. I love taking something old and finding a new purpose for it in my home.”
How did you come up with the name for your live show?
“In The Kitch was a fun name we thought because it was so obvious, and it matched my personality—fun, outgoing, quirky and humorous.”
What's your favorite thing to do when filming your show?
“I have learned so much producing In The Kitch. I executive produce it, I help create concepts, and I hand pick my guests. There is a lot of work to do right and I loved learning about the entire process.”
Any tips for aspiring chefs?
“There are a million spaghetti recipes out there. Be yourself. Let people fall in love with you. That’s what makes a successful celebrity chef.”
We’ve included some of our favorite videos from Johanna Cook if you’re looking for some extra tasty recipes for the family table.
If you don't have the free Periscope app, you can still view In The Kitch on the Momma Cuisine website, YouTube, or through Roku.
